| Summary, etc. | Examines the issue of corporate social responsibility. Suggests that for many people and organisations the term has different meanings. Across Europe there is the emerging concept of the social audit where an organisations ethical activities are open to public scrutiny. Companies going into new areas of activity such as the markets of Eastern Europe would be advised to be aware of such practices. However difficulties can arise when importing skills to a local population as it could be interpreted as a form of imperialism. Argues that this is not really true as new skills can be hugely beneficial to the local economy. An example of this is in the oil boom in northern England in the late 1970s and early 1980s where knowledge imported from the United States greatly increased local knowledge. |
