Summary, etc. Examines a new initiative between the Construction Industry Training Forum, Construction Skills and the Housing Forum, called Sustainable Training for Sustainable Communities. This encourages a partnering approach to training on social housing regeneration projects. Suggests that the new scheme will encourage a stable work environment for the industries to take on apprentices and train them on local contracts. Joint approaches will be encouraged for training led by the client involving one or more major contractors working with their subcontractors to recruit and train local people. Argues that John Prescott's decent homes strategy,which rules that by 2010 all social housing has to meet a certain standard, will place even more importance on funding and training craftspeople. The housing sector has indeed shown much interest in the new scheme encouraged by the grant available to fund apprentice training having risen from £6 000 to £8 400 a trainee.
