Flat roofs are not usually used for the whole roofing of houses or bungalows but are commonly found over porches, extensions, garages and bay windows as well as on purpose built blocks of flats. Whereas traditional pitched roofs can be expected to last more than 100 years without replacement, flat roofs will need replacing after 10-20 years. Examines the different kinds of roof coverings used for flat roofs and the three standard ways of insulating these roofs. Looks at the problems of poor construction, drainage and the build up of rubbish and recommends regular inspections of the roof area. Lists further sources of information.
