520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc. Recent monitoring of the top 500 town centres by the Local Data Company shows multiple closures in the first half of 2012 accelerating sixfold from the end of 2011. The growth of independents has slowed from 2.4% at the end of 2011 to just 0.8% in H1 2012. The national shop vacancy rate has increased to 14.6% which however disguises some significant regional differences. Comparison goods retailers have been hardest hit. Town centres are fundamentally changing both in terms of occupancy mix and quality.
