These guidelines have been produced to promote improved development near high voltage overhead power lines. They give practical guidance on how developers and planning authorities can reduce the visual impact of existing pylons and high voltage overhead lines on new residential and commercial development. The guidelines are based on eight generic design principles and techniques relating to prioritising the public realm: understanding the impact of topography;orientation of streets and blocks;reducing linearity; new uses for land under and immediately adjacent to overhead lines; development intensity; enclosure and built form; screening by landscape design; and promoting sensory richness.
