This new report from the Policy Exchange, the second in a series of three by these authors, looks at the housing development experience in Germany, Switzerland, Republic of Ireland and Australia. Whereas the localised fiscal and planning systems in Germany and Switzerland have led to large and affordable homes in green cities, the centralised planning systems in Ireland and Australia have contributed to skyrocketing house prices and restrictions on living space. The first report "Unaffordable housing - fables and myths" (ISBN 0954752767) showed that Britain's centralised system of planning restricts the supply of housing and the forthcoming, final report will apply the lessons learnt from the current study to the UK and produce a set of reforms aimed at giving Britain the housing it deserves.
