This information paper provides a brief overview of the lessons learnt from case studies into the deterioration of cement-based building materials and components. A common feature of many of the studies was the build-up of moisture, which was involved in a wide range of damaging reactions, which included sulfate reactions, steel-slag expansive reactions, and acid attack on concrete.
