Summary: This white paper outlines government's vision for a new heritage protection system. The proposals are based around three main principles: developing a unified approach to the historic environment; exploiting opportunities for inclusion and involvement; and delivering sustainable communities by ensuring heritage protection is an integral part of the planning system. Key proposals include: creating a single system for designating historic places to replace listing, scheduling and registering; merging listed building consent, scheduled monument consent, and conservation area consent with planning permission; and creating a single new Register of Historic Buildings to replace all existing lists and schedules. In addition to heritage protection reforms in England and Wales, the white paper contains UK wide proposals for an improved system of marine heritage protection. Responses required by 1 June 2007.
