Based on 200 hours of observation taken in Aylesbury from 2004-5. Finds that different demographics use public spaces at different times of day and for different purposes. Observes the limited effect of displacing undesirable behaviour, and the effect of the reputation on perception of public spaces. Notes that some use such areas for privacy or a sense of territorial ownership. Suggests that better amenities and good management can help all groups feel more comfortable. Observes the effect of different regulatory approaches, and of facilities on different groups. Notes the need for balance between security and a need for a sense of freedom.
