However, the rate of growth was below the average for the current nineteen-month period of expansion. Private sector development increased in July to 59.6 although the rate of growth remained well below March's high of 71.1. More than one-fifth of survey respondents reported an increase in public sector construction activity during the latest survey period, due to increased public sector new build, office construction and retail and leisure development. Reports higher levels of activity across all nine development areas covered by the survey with the strongest increases in activity were outside of London and the South East.
