Summary: Following on from government's 2007 "Future of building control" document (L137794), this consultation outlines government proposals and invites feedback on changes to the building control system in England and Wales. The changes aim to tackle shortcomings in the current system and improve compliance with the Building Regulations. Key areas of reform include: a periodic review of Building Regulations every three years; restricting the use of building notices to protect home owners from cowboy builders; increasing local authority powers to deal with illegal or substandard construction; the potential use of fixed penalty notices and stop notices; and giving local authorities more time and resources to focus on areas of greatest risk. The consultation closes on 10 June 2008.
