After flooding and the outbreak of various animal diseases in 2007, the Prime Minister requested that the Government's Rural Advocate provide a report on ways in which the rural economy might be strengthened. This report lists his findings and advice for the future. His suggestions include supporting sustainable places; empowering rural areas to build on existing economic strengths; the creation of a rural finance forum to examine and overcome lower capital investment in rural areas and that rural communities should be supported in flood prevention initivatives by the Environmental Transition Fund. The report presents a range of case studies in addition to statistical information to promote the points raised.
