Reports on the Shelter's research on affordable housing needs in England. Aims to find out how many households could be formed by 2026 and their composition; the amount of houses necessary by then; the backlog of social houses needed; the impact of the unmet housing target on the Government and the need for public funding to reach it. As a reminder, the government had planned to deliver annually 45,000 social rented houses and 25,000 low-cost homes by 2011. Suggests that because of the current economic slowdown, the need for affordable homes is more important than expected. To meet this need, there is necessity to build much more social rented and intermediates homes than planned. Shows that the Government and over housing parties need to find other ways to finance affordable housing projects, including having more public funds, to meet the housing targets and help the construction industry.
