Aims to understand the barriers to housing development on brownfield land in Nottingham and to identify public and private sector solutions to encourage more housing development on brownfield land. Nottingham was chosen as the case study city in the belief that it was reasonably representative of other major cities in England outside London. The detailed analysis of 30 brownfield sites in Nottingham, reveal the presence of a wide range of constraints which impact upon housing development. The significant constraints identified include poor market conditions, derelict structures, contamination and underground issues, landownership and difficulties with planning negotiations. The research report also sets out policy recommendations, focussing on aspects of planning and funding, on how to make more brownfield land available for housing.
