A paper presented at the COBRA Conference in New Delhi on 10-12 September 2013. Presents a taxonomy of research styles within the field of chartered surveying and discusses the significance of each in relation to practice. The paper identifies two other approaches that have largely been neglected but which also have valuable contributions to make. The first of these, research for practice, is shown as having the potential to deliver ready-made professional solutions that are capable of immediate implementation in practice. The second, research through practice, is seen as offering the unique possibility of capturing tacit knowledge from practice, and of making this available as part of the established corpus of professional knowledge.
