The estimates are based on returns from local authorities in England for the financial year 2002/03. Total municipal waste is up 1.8% to 28.8m tonnes, of which 24.8% had value (recycling, composting energy from waste). Municipal waste disposed of in landfill has decreased to 22m tonnes. Household waste accounted for 88% of all municipal waste with 14.5% recycled.
