Smaller manufacuturers report increase in orders

Total orders rose over the period with 33% of firms saying new orders were up and 28% saying they were down. The balance of plus 5% compares with plus 1% in January 2004 and minus 25% in October 2003. Export orders though were disappointing with no increase recorded in the survey; the strength of sterling was responsible for holding exporters back.
