Gross lending totalled a record £37.8bn, 15% higher than the £24.2bn lent in May and 24% higher than the £22.4bn lent for the same period in 2003. Lending for house purchase reached its highest ever monthly figure of £13.6bn and remortgaging also showed a substantial rise of 16% to £10.8bn. It also worryingly revealed that first-time buyers are now borrowing on average more than three times their income.
