NANS was originally proposed in the Rural White Paper 2000. The Noise Mapping Project England project is part of the first stage of NANS and aims to gather information on the ambient noise climate in England. Its objectives are to calculate noise levels and produce noise maps across England, to use the information to help develop NANS and to gain knowledge to assist in the implementation of the European Noise directive.
