Environmental engagement now mainstream

The BiE index uses benchmarking to push forward continuous improvement in environmental management and performance in participating companies (FTSE 100, FTSE 250, non-FTSE listed Business in the Community members and sector leaders from the Dow Jones Sustainability Index). Over 200 companies participated, an increase of 12% on the previous year, and for the first time companies had to evaluate their performance in two core impact areas; climate change and solid waste management. The next step in driving environmental management will be the launch of a corporate social responsibility (CSR) index in September 2002.
