Summary: Examines existing international law as it applies to the protection of cultural property in armed conflict and comments on the extent to which the participants in the recent Iraqi conflict have fulfilled their obligations. Traces the evolution of international agreements and treaties aimed at protecting cultural objects during times of armed conflict from the Hague Convention 1899 up to the UNESCO Convention on the Means of Prohibiting and Preventing the Illicit Import, Export and Transfer of Ownership of Cultural Property 1970.
