Internet and its potential role in the development of multifunctional agriculture

Argues that the internet has considerable potential in facilitating the development of multifunctionality, particularly in the field of marketing. However, this potential is limited by growth rates in the use of the internet, particularly in the farm sector, due to differential development of telecommunications infrastructure and to factors relating to development of human understanding and capacity. A co-ordinated policy is needed at national and supranational level to ensure that rural populations are able to participate in the digital society and to harness the internet effectively in the development of multifunctionality.
