RICS helps historic survey arc gain UNESCO world heritage site status

This accolade has been given to the Struve Arc which runs for over 2 820 km from Norway to the Black Sea. The Struve Arc was one of the defining geodetic survey measurements of the 19th century and equal in importance to the Great Arc of India surveyed by Lambton and Everest. The Struve Arc facilitated the first accurate measurement of a long section of a meridian arc (line of longitude), enabling a more accurate measurement of the earth's circumference and greater datum precision. RICS Education Trust and RICS Geomatics sponsored the FIG history of surveying working group's successful application to UNESCO.
