Presents the first inquiry by a parliamentary select committee to take a broad-based look at the nation's built heritage since 1994. Covers the priorities to be identified by DCMS in the forthcoming Heritage White Paper and the remit and effectiveness of the key heritage organisations such as DCMS and English Heritage. Assesses the balance between heritage and development needs in planning policy as well as access to heritage and the position of heritage as a cultural asset in the community. Examines heritage funding issues, the roles and responsibilities of English Heritage, the Heritage Lottery Fund and heritage bodies at all levels, and the supply of conservation professionals. Two volumes of written evidence accompany the report.
