Are you an architect, engineer, developer or builder? -- Why is the distance that I measure on the ground not the same as the distance that I measure off my map? -- So, why don't we continue surveying using local grids? -- So can we design a site on the National Grid?
Short guide on how to understand and avoid complications with scale factor. Outlines the issues surrounding scale factor in relation to digital mapping and surveying and also addresses the relationship between scale factor and national mapping; local distortion and using GPS RTK systems. Although written with the UK in mind, many of the points raised can be applied globally and it is intended that this guide can be used by members of the Geomatics faculty in explaining complex geo-subjects to ley people and professionals.
