Development opportunities around airports

Discusses the results of a two year research programme funded by the European Commission's Information Society Technologies Program undertaken by DEGW. The project Sane Accommodation in the New Economy (SANE) explored the effect that new technologies are having on working lives and working environments. SANE identifies a layer of different types of workplaces ranging from private (serviced offices, home working), privileged (clubs/airport lounges) and public (hotel lobbies/cafes). Airports with access to IT facilities such as the internet play an important role in the distributed workplace model for workers on the move. Figure I illustrates the SANE model. Forecasts airport capacity growth for leading airports including Heathrow and Gatwick.
