520 _aOver the years, housing and urban development in the developing world have been discussed at various fora and in the print media. The story, however, remains the same. Millions of people in the developing world are living in health- and life-threatening conditions in housing developments in various urban centres. Ghana is no exception to this. This paper discusses housing and urban development initiatives as means towards the alleviation of poverty. It traces housing and urban development strategies in Ghanaian urban centres and concludes that to alleviate poverty in Ghanaian urban settlements, it is necessary to take a critical look at issues such as building regulations and codes of practice, problems of urban land acquisition, housing financing, and last but not the least, provision of services in the urban settlements.
