520 _aThe Disability Discrimination Act 2005 (DDA 2005), which received Royal Assent on 7 April 2005, makes substantial amendments to the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 building on amendments already made to the 1995 Act by other legislation since 1999. The main provisions relate to the new duty of public authorities to promote equality of opportunity for disabled people; the broadening of the definition of disability to include those suffering from progressive conditions such as cancer, HIV and multiple sclerosis; improved access to rail transport by 2020; improved ability to make adjustments to unsuitable rented accommodation; liability for private clubs with 25 or more members; and liability for publishers of discriminatory material. The DDA 2005 is likely to be brought into force in three stages, October 2005, April 2006 and October 2006.
