520 _aGovernment announced in January 2005 in its five-year strategy "Sustainable communities - homes for all" its intention to introduce a new Green Belt Direction. Since then the ODPM has been refining and developing government proposals through the preparation of a consultation draft of its new Direction. Government. The proposed new Green Belt Direction will require planning applications for inappropriate development of certain types and scale in the Green Belt, which local planning authorities are minded to approve, to be referred to the Secretary of State. This consultation paper sets out the policy context and explains the various options and proposals for the Direction. It seeks views on the draft Direction and accompanying draft Circular as well as the partial Regulatory Impact Assessment. Responses are invited by 14 October 2005.
