520 _aThis new planning policy statement (PPS9) supported by a joint ODPM -DEFRA circular (L130650) will strengthen protection of ancient woodlands and other valuable habitats such as heaths, rivers, wetlands and coastal lands. PPS9 sets out the major role that the planning system has to play in conserving the natural heritage both on designated sites and in the wider environment. Key features of PPS 9 include the maintenance by local authorities of up-to-date information on the environmental characteristics of their area, planning policies that enhance biodiversity and geological conservation and planning decisions that aim to prevent at harm to biodiversity and geological interests. ODPM will publish a good practice guide to accompany PPS9 later in 2005.
