| 520 | _aThis report states that construction is the most dangerous industry in London; although employing only 5% of the workforce, it accounts for 50% of work-related fatalities and 20% of major injuries. Whilst acknowledging that the UK government and the industry have taken measures to reduce the number of accidents, more still needs to be done. It argues that public sector contracts should be awarded only to those contractors who can demonstrate high health and safety standards. Other recommendations include better resourcing of the HSE constructions inspection team, more safety representatives on site, linking occupational health medicals and the GP system, and the introduction of skills and language training for the growing numbers of the workforce for whom English is not their first language. It also urges the Olympic Procurement Authority to ensure that construction contracts place strong emphasis on health and safety. | ||
