Concerns about food quality, safety, effects on the environment, are becoming paramount and present challenges and opportunities for British farmers. The retail sector is globalising. A cadre of massive supermarket chains is spreading tentacles across the World. In general, these firms are not British. Fewer and larger food manufacturers are dominating the branded goods markets of the globe. The other side of the farmgate there is accelerated rationalisation in the numbers of farm input manufacturers and distributors. Sandwiched uncomfortably between these major players is the farming community. How should it respond in this first decade of the 21st century?!
