| 520 | _aThe rapid economic growth in Ireland experienced in recent years has placed particular pressured on the urban development markets of the Dublin urban region. Peripheral expansion in a dispersed manner has occurred in the absence of an effective regional settlement strategy. The recent surge of development activity has involved the creation of an economic rim of employment concentrated to the edge of the existing city area. Commuting patterns of up to 100km have be came established due to the shortage of affordable housing in the core city area. Recent policy responses have included strengthening the Regional strategic development plan and consideration of new urban governance structures to reflect the expanded city region. An attempt to link transportation and development policies in a strategic manner has become a policy imperative in the light of policy commitments to sustainable development or urban environmental quality issues. The long term implications of the current patterns on urban planning transportation and land market processes will be explored in the light of national and international policy experience with alternative approaches to regional spatial growth problems considered. In particular the paper will focus on the impact of demand surges on property markets and the role of infrastructural and planning decisions in the development land market. The emerging urban form in Dublin is being shaped by development market realities and the role of policies on the location and shape of urban expansion require on understanding of the urban spatial context. It is expected that the examination of such trends and policy responses will be of research interest for comparable urban region. | ||
