520 _aThe proposed research will help clarify the need for a better understanding of technological applications in environmental management and to stimulate awareness of the role a national 'Information Architecture' could play in a coordinated ICZM strategy in the UK. Objective: to develop an operational Geographic Desision Support, Processing and Dissemination System (GDSPDS) to deliver remotely sensed and GIS data and information to coastal managers in a form that is both usable and applicable to the range of issues that concern them (inlcuding monitoring, mapping, sustainable development, coastal defence, protection, conservation, leisure, recreation, development, hazard management etc.) to utilise Internet/Intranet/Extranet technology as both a catalyst and mechanism to facilitate developing a coordinated and consistent approach to CZM between LAs and other agencies and bodies by development of a data catalogue which can be used a a coastal zone management focal point or 'portal', and; to develop a flagship demonstrator project system using the Solway Firth as an example.
