The changes, which come into force on 6 April 2007, will affect future building work in England and Wales, such as the erection, extension or material alteration of a building, and how fire safety is designed into a building. Key changes include the use of residential sprinkler systems in accordance with BS 9251: 2005, amendments to the guidance on smoke alarms in accordance with BS 5839-6: 2004, simplified guidance on means of escape, changes to the use of self-closing devices, and the incorporation of BS EN 13501-5: 2005 into the guidance on roof coverings.
