520 _aExplores the nature and process of innovation in Small Construction Knowledge-Intensive Professional Services Firms (SCKIPSFs), which include many surveying practices. Argues that performance improvement in the construction industry is significantly influenced by the innovation performance of SCKIPSFs, but notes there is little research in this area. Conducts a review of relevant literature, and develops a knowledge-based innovation model. Uses the conceptual model to analyse the results of a case study. The findings identify two forms of knowledge-based innovation: exploitative innovation and exploration innovation.
