520 _aSeeks to inform the debate about why the world's fasted growing cities are built at high density, often favouring commercial buildings. Reviews past research into the economic and sustainable impacts of high density development, draws on discussions with developers and occupiers, and uses an economic modelling of the impact of increasing employment density on output. Using the findings, the authors explain and estimate the economic costs and benefits of high density commercial development in central business districts. Concludes that increased density leads to productivity increases in five ways: increased specialisation; knowledge spillovers; competition; wider labour market choice for employers and economies of scale.
