520 _aA paper presented at the COBRA Conference in New Delhi on 10-12 September 2013. Looks at how universities, architects and builders can house large numbers of students on smaller building footprints, referencing projects in France and the Netherlands. The objective of this paper is to offer an alternative to the student housing industry with the concept of using prefabricated shipping containers as an economic and viable choice for temporary or permanent student housing on- and off-campus. This paper represents how universities, architects and builders can house large numbers of students on smaller building footprints while still providing all the amenities that students of today expect. The sustainable benefit, cost effectiveness and structural integrity of the facilities are presented for this alternative student housing proposal.
