520 _aA paper presented at the COBRA Conference in New Delhi on 10-12 September 2013. Investigates by identifying the shortcomings within the current mechanisms to limit financial risks in order to develop a new method that can be used to reduce construction cost overruns in South Africa caused during the estimation of contingency sums. The findings and results of the research were used to propose new additional methods aimed at reducing the financial risks and disputes caused by the identified items of risks within the contingency sums in South Africa. The research is aimed at adding more value to the industry if implemented by eliminating these items of risk which still lead to persistent cost overruns which cannot be managed effectively by the existing traditional method which allows the use of a percentage only in calculating the contingency sums.
