520 _aRICS "Residential Lettings Survey for Great Britain" for the three months to end of January 2004 shows first time buyers are being squeezed out of the housing market by buy-to-let investors who become the landlords of those who would otherwise be owner-occupiers. 21% of RICS members report rises in the number of house lettings, up from 13% in the previous quarter. Rents have increased modestly across Britain in the last three quarters; a net 12% more surveyors reported a rise in rents than a fall, up from 5% in October last year.
