490 _aENDS Report
_v(349) February 2004, 36(1)
520 _aA report by FERN, a UK-based forest protection group, compares eight forest certification schemes. The report, "Footprints in the forest", concludes that the increasing number of schemes is causing confusion in the marketplace and hampering efforts to improve forest management. The World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) has also launched an initiative to deal with the crisis over certification schemes. WBCSD also argues that the proliferation of schemes is the largest obstacle to promoting sustainable development in the forestry sector, using a report, "Towards a sustainable paper cycle", by the International Institute for Environment and Development as support for its argument. "Footprints in the forest" is available on the FERN website, www.fern.org. "Towards a sustainable paper cycle" is available at www.wbcsd.ch together with the discussion paper "Forest certification systems and the legitimacy thresholds model".
