520 _aSpecial report looks at the attempts by government to address the decline of Britain's former coalfield towns. Finds that more than 10 000 jobs have been created in the Dearne Valley alone, with the vast majority of new jobs being in the retail, distribution or telephone services. Good local transport infrastructure is also mentioned as being a key factor in successful regeneration throughout the region. However, employment rates throughout the coalfield areas are nearly 20% below the national average and the author concludes that so far at least coalfield regeneration has not been a success. Summarises the ODPM Select Committee report "Coalfields communities". View the report at www.publications.parliament.uk.
