| 520 | _aLocal authorities must take a harder line on privately-owned empty homes that remain vacant for more than a year, according to a new report by the Empty Homes Agency and Mori. The report concentrated on the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham, where there are currently 850 empty private homes. The study aimed to discover why so many homes were vacant when the borough currently has 1 610 families registered homeless. The research concluded that local authorities should devise new ways to encourage owners to bring back empty properties back into use, such as grants or low interest loans. If the soft approach fails, the study backs tougher means, such as giving local authorities the power to compulsorily lease empty homes.
