520 _aThe decline of UK soils is wide-spread and growers may be unaware of the situation, according to the National Soil Resources Institute (NSRI). Surveys of a range of topsoils reveal organic matter has dropped by an average 0.5% across all soils and erosion is also a serious problem. NSRI scientists believe the way to tackle it is through local projects that appeal to a farmer's natural interest in the resource. Local measures such as partnerships with agronomists and growers is helping to reverse the damage.
