Highlights of the survey are: 2003 was a record year for mortgage lending with remortgaging accounting for 44% of the total, first-time buyers reached a record low and their average age increased to 34, deposits rose by more than house prices and capital repayment mortgages remained the most popular mortgage type with borrowers switching between fixed-rate and variable-rate mortgages according to short-term cost.
