_v16 June 2004 (2)
520 _aInterest rate increases appear to signal the Bank of England's concern about the destabilising effects of the continued strength of the housing market and consumer borrowing. Activity in the construction sector in the first quarter 2004 showed a modest slowdown but output rose by an outstanding year-on-year 9.1%. UK house price rises continue to be robust, defying those economists who predicted a housing market crash. The Australian market experience points for some to a probable slowdown here but not necessarily a precursor of a deeper downturn.
