520 _aThe worldwide protection of vital food crops will be sustained under a new international agreement, "The international treaty on plant genetic resources for food and agriculture", coming into force on 29 June 2004. The UK is one of more than 50 signatories to the treaty which aims to improve food security, promote sustainable farming and to ensure that plant genetic resources, owned by the country in which they are found, are conserved, used sustainably and whose benefits are fairly shared.
