520 _aDiscusses recent guidelines, "Novation agreement CIC/NovAgr" (ISBN 18918671362) issued by the Construction Industry Council (CIC) which may provide an alternative to novation, which rarely benefits the contractor and can cause confusion. Novation is defined as when two parties, who have a contract between them, agree that a third party shall stand in for one of them. Warns that all parties concerned must agree on novation and they must be certain that they are not accepting further obligations which they did not have before. The CIC has issued a liability briefing "Novation of consultant's appointments on design and build projects", which is intended to provide guidance on novation. Copies of both documents are available from CIC t +44 (0)20 7637 8692.
