520 _a The "Halifax house price index" for July 2004 has been released. Figures show that the market may be slowing. House prices grew by 1.3% in July, which was very similar to June's 1.2%. In the previous six months the average has been 2.0% plus. The average UK house price broke through the £160 000 barrier in July. While this is good news for existing home owner as their financial positions are strengthened, it highlights how hard the situation is for first-time buyers. Over the year to June 2004, terraced houses were the best performing type of property across the UK with prices rising by 23%.
