520 _aReports on the effect of climate change on the country's buildings. Research by consulting engineers Arup suggests that global warming will make offices unusable between June and August, with temperatures in the worst performing offices reaching 39C. Air conditioning is only a short term solution to this as the systems themselves emit greenhouse gases that can lead to global warming in the long term. The recommendations of "Futreproofing our buildings" include smarter building management to reduce heat gain, the use of blinds and shading to reduce solar gain and the use of photovoltaics or renewable energy to minimise emissions caused by cooling.
